What is high blood pressure (hypertension)?

    Causes for high blood pressure are hard to find although certain lifestyle factors are thought to contribute to the condition.

    When the cause cannot be determined, it’s called primary hypertension. When a cause is determined, the term secondary hypertension is used to describe it.

    Symptoms of high blood pressure

    High blood pressure does not usually produce symptoms, however if you experience the following, see your physician for blood pressure check up.

    Some of the experiences are recurring headaches, nosebleeds, unexplained sweating, shortness of breath, dizziness, ringing in the ears, shortness of breath and visual disturbances.

    Other experiences may include bitter taste in the mouth, discharge of yellowish and scant urine, dry mouth, red eyes, red face, vertigo, and flushed cheeks.


    Causes of high blood pressure

    Obesity, diet high in fat, salt or sugar, alcohol, caffeine, smoking, stress, hot temper, age, inactivity, hereditary, and medical disorders.

    Pregnancy or birth control pills, heavy metal poisoning, and racial factors (high blood pressure is common among African Americans.)


    High blood pressure home remedies

    There are literally dozens of powerful medications for lowering high blood pressure.

    However, most people can lower their blood pressures to the safety zone or (good blood pressure) without resorting to drugs.


    Water is a natural remedy for high blood pressure. Most medical doctor’s recommendation is to drink 15 glasses of water a day.

    Water relaxes your entire system, including tight constricted arteries which are the main cause of high blood pressure.

    Celery and rice for good blood pressure

    Wash and cut 60g of celery and boil it with 60 grams of rice for 1 day consumption. Eat this for 10 days and expect your blood pressure to come down.

    Kelp and mung beans

    Boil 60g each of kelp and mung beans until they are extremely soft, then season with brown sugar and eat it once a day for 1 week.

    Here is another remedy with mung beans. Soak mung beans in water overnight and boil with equal amount of seaweed and some rice the next day for long term consumption.

    Banana for high blood pressure treatment

    A high blood pressure patient ate 5 bananas a day and got eventually cured. It doesn’t cost to try it. Bananas are loaded with potassium which reduces blood pressure.

    Tomatoes for good blood pressure

    Eat 2 fresh tomatoes on an empty stomach first thing in the morning for 15 days. Repeat this from time to time as a treatment program.

    Soybeans and kelp

    Fry 20 black soybeans with 20g kelp first, and boil them in 3 cups of water until the water is reduced by half. Eat as soup.

    Hawthorn berries

    Get 1 pound of fresh seeds from hawthorn berries and soak them in 70 ounces of water overnight.

    Boil it the next day for about 10 minutes, strain and drink 2-3 cups a day. This is said to be a good blood pressure remedy.

    Blueberry leaves

    Boil 1 teaspoon full of dried and crushed blueberry leaves in a cup of water and steep for 12 minutes. Strain and drink 3 times a day, (morning, afternoon and evening).


    Boil 1ounce of meadowsweet in ¾ pint of water. Steep it for 10 minutes, strain and drink it several times in a day.

    Meadowsweet is very rich in iron and magnesium which is good for blood disorders.

    Honey for good blood pressure

    Honey is believed to lower high blood pressure. A patient took some honey for 2 months and her blood pressure lowered to normal.

    Celery and honey

    Wash 500g of celery and squeeze out the juice. Mix the celery juice with 50ml honey and warm it in a small pan. Divide and drink twice in a day.

    Mint, chamomile and tag alder

    Mix equal parts of mint, chamomile and tag alder. Put 1 ounce of the mixture in 1 pint of water and boil for about 15 minutes. Strain and drink half cup 3 times a day.

    Seaweed for good blood pressure

    Boil 100g seaweed to eat every day. Sea weed can be found in most big grocery stores. Asian stores would be the best place to get fresh ones.


    Hyssop is said to be a high blood pressure remedy. Boil a handful of chopped leaves and stems of hyssop in a pint of water for about 10 minutes.

    Steep for 10 minutes, strain it and add some honey to sweeten it. Drink as tea 2 times daily.

    Primrose leaves for good blood pressure

    Boil ¼ cup of primrose leaves in 1cup of water and steep for 10 minutes. Strain and sweeten with honey. Drink it with meals.

    You can also add a handful of primrose leaves to your salad daily.

    Gotu kola

    Make a tea with ½ - 1g of dried gotu kola and drink 3 times a day. You can also take 30-60 mg of extract 3 times a day, or 300-500 mg in capsule form 1 or 2 times a day.

    Refrain from using gotu kola if you are using drugs that cause drowsiness.

    Garlic for good blood pressure

    Studies show that garlic can lower your blood pressure about 5-8 points on the average. Garlic is widely used in Germany as a blood pressure medication.

    It is believed that garlic partly lowers blood pressure by relaxing the smooth muscles of the blood vessels, allowing them to dilate.

    Garlic can be easily added to salads, soups, sandwiches, and marinades. Try to avoid cooking it at high temperature, because it may destroy some of the medicinal qualities.

    Eat them raw whenever possible. Two cloves daily should be sufficient or take 500 mg pill or capsule form 2 times a day.

    Lemon for good blood pressure

    Add a lemon juice to a cup of water and sweeten with a tablespoon of honey for daily drinking.


    Peel 5 washed potatoes and boil the peelings in a covered pot with 2 cups of water for 15 minutes.

    Steep for about 10 minutes and strain it. Drink 2 cups a day for high blood pressure treatment.

    Watermelon seed

    Grind a quarter cup of watermelon seeds and boil in 1 pint of water for about 12 minutes. Strain and sweeten with honey for daily drinking.

    Cayenne pepper for good blood pressure

    Cayenne pepper is highly recommended as a remedy for high blood pressure. Add 1 teaspoon to a cup of hot water and drink it once a day.

    Weight loss remedy

    One of the most important thing you can do to control your blood pressure is to cut down on your weight.

    The more weight you have, the more blood circulates through your body, causing more pressure on the arteries.

    Research suggests that 5-10 pounds of weight loss will lower your blood pressure. The best way to control your weight is through proper diet and exercises.


    Exercise is vital for good blood pressure. Some doctors recommend 30 minutes of aerobic exercise 4 times a week for their blood pressure patients.

    Regular exercise relaxes artery walls and decreases stress. Walking is one of the best exercises for people whose blood pressures are high.

    Do not use Saunas

    The hot steam from saunas can make your blood pressure rise to dangerous levels.

    Stop smoking

    If heart health and the circulatory system are compromised, give up smoking. It’s just healthy to quit smoking anyway.

    Manage your stress

    If you know high stress levels are contributing to high blood pressure readings, make it a priority to take some time off to relax.

    This does not mean slumping in front of the TV with a bucket full of popcorn.

    If you are religious, meditate to God, if not think on positive things or get involved in some nice and easy hobbies.


    More diet remedies for good blood pressure

    A diet high in fiber is needed to control blood pressure or reverse blood pressure.

    Your meals should be based around fresh raw vegetables: soy products: whole grain, like seeds, oats, beans, and nuts.

    Eat more foods with potassium as you lower the intake of salt. Good sources of potassium include alfalfa, kelp, tomatoes, cabbage, orange, bananas, asparagus, and apples.

    Other potassium rich foods include cantaloupe, dates honeydew, melons, kiwifruit, mangoes, broccoli, cucumbers, and avocado.

    Foods to avoid

    Avoid foods that have a reputation for raising blood pressure. These include caffeinated drinks (carbonated drinks as well as tea and coffee).

    Others are, saturated fats such as, butter, cream cheese, red meat, salty snacks, convenience “ready meal”, and take out dishes (particularly Chinese food). Restrict these foods and expect a good blood pressure.

    People with high blood pressure must restrict the use of salt. Salt contains sodium which causes water retention and increases the pressure inside the arteries.

    Limit your intake of sugary foods such as processed foods, packaged foods, sugary baked foods, and foods that are sweetened naturally.

    Juices for good blood pressure

    Fruit and vegetable juices are quick to have impact on the body. Some of the good fruits and vegetables juices to lower blood pressure include cucumber juice, and grapefruit juice.

    Others are raspberry juice, garlic juice, orange juice and blackberry juice.

    You may need a juicer to juice some of these fruits and vegetables, such as raspberry.

    Here is a recipe for juicing raspberry.

  • ½ pound of raspberries

  • 1 medium lime pilled with white pith remaining.

  • 1 large orange pilled with white pith remaining.

    Juice the raspberries first, and juice the lime and orange second. Mix with raspberry juice. This will yield 1¼ cups. Add crushed ice to it and drink regularly.


    Vitamins and minerals

    Flaxseed oil for good blood pressure

    Flaxseed has been shown to be effective in reducing high blood pressure, probably due to the effects of the omega-3 fatty acids it contains.

    Flaxseed oil is susceptible to oxidation and can become rancid when exposed to air for a long period of time.

    It should be refrigerated and used soon after opening. Use as recommended on container.

    Calcium and magnesium

    Calcium and magnesium have been shown in studies to lower blood pressure. They relax blood arteries. Take a combination of 500 mg of calcium and 250 mg of magnesium daily.

    Potassium for good blood pressure

    It is important to lower sodium because this mineral can raise blood pressure in those who are sensitive to it.

    Potassium and sodium act like a seesaw in your body. The higher your intake of potassium, the lower your level of sodium.

    Potassium has been shown in repeated studies to lower blood pressure. Take as part of salt substitute product. Or use 2,000 mg under the supervision of your physician.

    Do not use potassium if you are taking a potassium – sparing diuretic medication, or if you have a kidney or heart disease.

    Fish oil

    Fish oil reduces high blood pressure when taken on a long-term basis. Take 3,000 mg 3 times a day.

    Vitamin C

    Vitamin C has a mild blood lowering effects. It also helps the body to detoxify toxic metals such as, lead which contributes to high blood pressure. Take 1,000-2,000 mg daily.

    Coenzyme Q10 for good blood pressure

    Studies have shown that coenzyme Q10 nutrient reduces blood pressure. It helps to generate energy in every cell in your body.

    Take the recommended dosage of 100 mg 2-3 times daily after a meal.

    Passion flower

    Passion flower relaxes the nerves and it helps bring down blood pressure that increases because of stress. Take 250 mg or 0.5ml 2-3 times daily.

    Reishi mushroom

    Reishi mushroom extract is believed to lower blood pressure. The recommended dosage is 500 mg 3 times a day.
