Dark skin people have a built-in sunscreen that can reduce their share of ultra violet light (UVL). Heavily pigmented skin can stop as much as 95 percent of (UVL) from reaching the deep dermal layers of the skin, where vitamin d is made.

It is therefore not surprising that dark skin people in the colder climates have more cases of rickets than their light skin counterparts.

Air pollution may also contribute to vitamin d deficiency symptoms. Researches have shown that increased pollution over the years have cut out our total vitamin d accumulation over 15 percent.

Age is a major factor that contributes to vitamin d deficiency symptoms. The metabolic minuet of vitamin d may falter with age: Intestinal absorption of the vitamin may get out of adjustment, and the liver may not handle the nutrient as well as it should.
